For my Genre Research Activity I chose the genre of Psychological Horror
Some genre conventions of psychological horror is tension, focused on the mental deterioration of characters, has themes like paranoia, obsession, guilt and trauma. Production uses conventions like eerie music or unsettling silence, slow pacing and often uses of close ups. Some institutional conventions often market these types of movies as "chilling" or "disturbing", while trailer might use images that are unsettling or that provoke thought.
Some film samples are:
Black Swan: The film is focused on the psyche of a ballerina struggling with perfectionism. The film creates a sense of terror by blurring the lines between reality and hallucination using paranoia.
Hereditary: This film focuses on grief and trauma of the family's curse. This film is very slow paced as it builds tension.
