Mise-en-scene

For my class we had a project that was about Mise-en-scene where a group of four people had to create a scene for a person that was chosen randomly. We had to create a station that would immerse our classmates into the setting and to make them feel as if they kknew the character. The person that my group had chosen was Alexander Smith. He was meant to represent someone that was driven by a thirst for knowledge and adventure, this character seeks out new experiences and uncovers hidden truths. Their curiosity often leads them into unexpected situations.

My groups activity goals consisted of creating a neat presentation, a soundscape that goes with his story, and a model of the places he loves to explore. Alexander Smith was a male explorer that would spend most of his day scuba diving and exploring the beach but at night loved to go into the jungle and observe the wildlife. Alexander wore a white tank with a brown leather jacket on top, paired with beige cargo pants and his sturdy black boots. He carried a black fedora and carried a brown whip for protection. He usually traveled in a black jeep but when he went scuba diving or exploring other islands he would go on his large sail boat. Some examples of what I created to illustrate Alexander Smith is a model of his setting. I painted a cardboard box to create his daily scene. Half of the box was painted was the jungle and the other half as the beach. I also bought a model jeep that people could play with.

In my station we did a PowerPoint presentation on every computer. The PowerPoint consisted of the characters description, physical appearance, setting, mood board and his favorite songs. Then on the last slide we did the soundscape that portrays his daily adventures. Alexander Smith's image is a deliberate character construction by the media, relying on the clever selection of visual elements to make him seem instantly cool and exciting. The fedora, whip, and rugged leather jacket immediately remind us of classic explorers,  signaling that he's a capable action hero. His split routine jungle at night, beach by day is a strong visual trick. Exploring the jungle in the dark uses a process of othering, making that setting feel mysterious, dangerous, and set apart from the easygoing safety of the sunlit beach. This constantly shifting environment, where he is always moving between the chaotic night and the calm day, works to de-center him, meaning he never belongs to any one place and is defined entirely by his constant movement and adaptability.

Genre Activity

Genre Research

For my Genre Research Activity I chose the genre of  Psychological Horror

Some genre conventions of psychological horror is tension, focused on the mental deterioration of characters, has themes like paranoia, obsession, guilt and trauma. Production uses conventions like eerie music or unsettling silence, slow pacing and often uses of close ups. Some institutional conventions often market these types of movies as "chilling" or "disturbing", while trailer might use images that are unsettling or that provoke thought.

Some film samples are:

Black Swan: The film is focused on the psyche of a ballerina struggling with perfectionism. The film creates a sense of terror by blurring the lines between reality and hallucination using paranoia.

Hereditary: This film focuses on grief and trauma of the family's curse. This film is very slow paced as it builds tension.

Other examples are...

Get Out

Jacobs Ladder

The Babadook

The Shinning

Donnie Darko

Sound Project

My Sound Project

In class my teacher taught us about foley sounds and how they are created. Foley sounds are sometimes made of expected objects, for example in “A Quiet Place” the sound of monsters ears unfolding was created by twisting lettuce and celery stalks. When using foley sounds I learned that they record the scene first and then add the sound after. A prop pass is when they are recording a film and record the dialogue but after go back and recreate the sound to intensify it and add detail. I also learned about sounds importance in a scene. It gives your scene dimension and adds emotion.

In our first sound project we created a 1-2 minute scene where the plot was portrayed through the use of sound. My partner and I chose a scene that was a bike ride. During the bike ride the biker gets caught in a storm and has to run into a restaurant for shelter. In our project we had to create 4 of our own foley sounds, our foley sounds was the door slamming, the key locking the door, the bikes bell, and the chair moving as the biker gets seated in the restaurant.

For my second project I had to add sound to my previously filmed OWF. My scene had to portray the word arrogant. A mistake I had made when creating my OWF was that I left a lot of space for dialogue in my film, although I could not use any. For my project the setting was a classroom soI tried paying attention to the little details that you would hear in a classroom like, pencils sharpening, students talking, chairs moving and footsteps.

For my first project I felt confident in what I turned in but I know that there will always be something I could have done better like maybe adding more plot to my story. For my second project I felt that my first mistake was what I had filmed. It was very difficult to get the correct timing in the knocking and tapping of the desks. I also felt that I could have done better when it came to my foley sounds. Some of the foley sounds I did was classroom chatter, and the different types of knocks and pen tappings.
